Blog City and music.

It's a slow day in the real world, it's a slow blogging day. So I thought I'd complain a bit. I'd like to complain about file space on blog city. Being a premium user (insert smug self-satisfaction), I get some file space. However, I'm only allowed to put up files that are smaller than 500k (I think that's the number), even if I have space for a larger file. What the heck? That little link off in the left gutter about who I am, I claim to be a composer (among other things). It would be nice if I could post some (or even one) of my compositions on here for anyone who's interested (assuming there is such a creature out there. Alas, I cannot, because no matter how much sound quality I sacrifice, it won't fit. If you have some kind of interest in hearing what I've written, feel free to IM me on AOL, SN: Sherck and I'll happily transfer one or more music files to you. I've written and had recorded a set of three pieces for chorus, a set of two pieces for women's chorus, a piece for violin and piano, and a string quartet.

On a more positive note, the reason why I thought of this again (it was quite a while ago that I first tried to post these music files) is because I took some time this morning to use some software (belonging to one of my students) to edit out some dead space in the music files that I have (some blowing of a pitch pipe, uproarious applause, and coughing). It still won't make them small enough, but that wasn't the point. Here's the postive note I mentioned: I'm sending these modified audio tracks along with other application materials for a composition contest. Of course, I have no objective idea about how I'll measure up, but I'm pretty sure I can't win if I don't apply at all. The basic idea behind this contest is that, based on your initail submissions, their committee chooses three finalists. These finalists then each write a new composition which is the piece then judged to choose a winner. Everyone who's a finalist gets $500 and, of course, their composition performed, both of which are pretty good. The winner gets a total of $1000. Just being a finalist would be pretty awesome. We'll see.
