Cuddling

posted Tuesday, 17 October 2006
No time tonight for a real post, but I thought I'd share this. As long-time readers may or may not have bothered to remember, I pay some attention to a professional football team from Cincinnati, a team which lost last Sunday. Although you can never entirely blame a loss on the refs, they certainly did make some bad calls, including one roughing the passer call which should have been a sack and forced fumble that would have all but won the game for the Bengals. Instead it's a penalty, their drive keeps going, they score the winning touchdown. I haven't been able to see the footage of it, but apparently in the post-game interview the coach said of this play "I guess you have to cuddle guys to the ground." A reporter asked him to repeat that and he yelled "I said we have to teach our guys to cuddle quarterbacks!!"
Anyway, I found it very funny and sure wish I could find a video of this.

What if some penalties resulted in a player being removed from the field of play like in the sport of hockey? However, a second string player would be substituted in place of the offender. Just a thought.

Or maybe penalties actually should involve cuddling... it might make those big burly football players think twice before committing a penalty. Or it might open them up to feelings they didn't realize they had. Whatever.

I saw the title and thought you were going to make a post about your sex life.

Which is exactly why it's such a funny word in the context of football and a coach's post-game speech...

I'm currently reading Between You And I, a book about bad English (at which I am a master) and featuring many mistakes commonly made due to ignorance, mispronounciation and plain old stupidity, so your post seems quite timely.

Yea, cuddle and football aren't two words I'd think to find together. Even though you are talking football, which makes me want to nap, I did find this amusing.

Good--I'll consider that a successful entry then!

I always suspected latent tendencies in football...
