A friend of mine posted this on Facebook today and I wanted to pass it along. It's a simple idea and presented with great clarity and precision.
The hard part, of course, is actually finding local businesses. Not franchises. Is there such a grocery store? Hardware store? It seems like restaurants are the easiest local businesses to come up with. Barbers and salons (too bad I cut my own hair). Bike shops often seem to be locally owned.
The 3/50 project doesn't support home-based businesses, as they don't bring the same kind of benefits as the brick-and-mortar shops(that's based on the taxes paid). However, home-based businesses are worthy of our support too. I feel that's especially true of farms and would like to see local food production strengthened by greater demand. The 3/50 Project is a great start to get people thinking about issues of the local economy. Stop by their website if you want more information and think about how more of the money you spend can stay in your community, strengthening your community, making it more resilient.
