For all of my Lenten Bah-humbuggery, the Good Friday service was really beautiful. Anyway, the music was, and I say that not as a performer tooting his own choir's horn, but as a performer who knows that this was almost certainly the single best performance we've done of every piece. Further, I have no doubt that this success was largely because the compositions were placed within the religious context. The music was written for religious purposes, presumably inspired by the convictions of the composers (or at least paid for by the Church). Most of the members of the choir are Christians, and that presumably had something to do with why we've never performed these pieces with such musical intelligence and expressiveness as we did yesterday. From a musical standpoint, it was Great Friday.
