At 5:40 this morning, two things happened at exactly the same moment: Lauren's alarm went off and my cell phone started ringing. The former indicated that it was time for her to get up and get ready for work; the latter was to tell me that I didn't have to come into work: snow day.
I can't say we really needed a snow day today, but there was a parking ban in Providence so we couldn't have school. Folks in the city offices are so jumpy now after people got fired for the kids being stuck on the bus in that blizzard. Lauren was, understandably, a bit surly about the situation, but eventually she got up and started on her way.
An hour or so later, she called to tell me that right after she arrived at school, they called it off. Let me emphasize that: after she drove over an hour through the snow to get to work, they decided to cancel school. She's not the only teacher or student who has to drive a significant distance into school each morning, but they waited until it was time for school to start to make a decision.
And I thought she was surly before....
Ultimately, of course, she's glad to have most of the day off, but a little consideration would be nice.
Remember I mentioned Colonization yesterday? I discovered that I still had the install disc (on which, incidentally, the game was under 5MB), but I couldn't get it to install because for all intents and purposes, DOS doesn't exist any more (WinXP). It's fake DOS, and it doesn't fake very convincingly. However, I found out that some folks went to the trouble of recreating the game in a Java version, so it can be played on any platform. That can be found here. Needless to say, I've had a productive snow day so far, taming the wilderness and slaughtering the natives. I tried to play nice, but they started it--and they're lands just looked so much better than the ones I already had....
