Movie Review: UP

posted Sunday, 7 June 2009

Since our main character is a crotchety old man, I feel perfectly justified in starting off this review with some complaining. First, I resent on general principle being charged $2 per ticket for what amounts to the rental of 3-D glasses. I resent this doubly when, like UP, I don't really feel like the movie gained much by being in 3-D. There were few or no "wow" moments where the visual effects were stunning: I'd say it gained hardly anything by being in 3-D. And, of course, I resent it triply because they're already screwing us so badly with the price of concessions. Back in my day, we could get...

[/end old man rant]

This movie was really, really good. If you've seen the previews, you probably have a sense of the film's humor, though not its gravitas. Within the first fifteen minutes or so, it was playing on our sympathies, and if we hadn't been warned to expect it to do so, we probably would have shed tears. It's still a funny movie, but a moving one as well, even after the first fifteen. We enjoyed it thoroughly.
