Observations from the road

posted Tuesday, 24 June 2008

The last couple times we've come through New York (state), taking the New York Thruway across, we've stopped at the first rest area we come to, perhaps 30 miles in. There are two things that I absolutely love about this rest area.

The first is that they offer free WiFi for any of us who have laptops along for the ride.

The second is that they don't make me look at another travel plaza. When I'm outside and I look over to the other side of the highway, I don't see more cars, more restaurants, more travelers, and another island peddling petroleum. I see a gentle slope with a couple farms. I see cows grazing. I get to see something of the life of this area instead of just skimming above it in my hermetically-sealed auto.

They're small things, but I really appreciate them.

There's something to be said for a nice travel stop. There's one on the Garden State Parkway (a lovely highway in itself as far as highways go) that is located on the median. You pull right off and park, it's amazingly clean, and there are 4 or 5 shops. Then you pull right off onto the highway again. Small, but incredibly convenient and easy.

Takes the drudgery out of a long trip, something to look forward to. Do you have other special places like this one?
