Poetry in motion

posted Saturday, 14 October 2006
My interest in baseball waxes and wanes. Right now, it's probably on the wane, but I can appreciate the game (I just don't love it the way that I love football, for instance). Still, in between college football games today, I caught the Detroit Tigers' American-League-winning finish in the 9th this evening. In a post-game interview, the interviewer said "there is joy in Mudville," a reference to the famous poem and how bad the Tigers have been for so long. Not anymore, evidently. In honor of their victory, I would offer the following less-well-known poem.
"The Pitcher" by Robert Francis
His art is eccentricity, his aim
How not to hit the mark he seems to aim at,
His passion how to avoid the obvious,
His technique how to vary the avoidance.
The others throw to be comprehended. He
Throws to be a moment misunderstood.
Yet not too much. Not errant, arrant, wild,
But every seeming aberration willed.
Not to, yet still, still to communicate
Making the batter understand too late.
By the way, am I the only one who gets annoyed by what seems to be the lack of control we have with Blog-City on the spacing of lines? Poetry just looks awful and I can't seem to make it look right. Anyone know a better way to do it?

I think if you hold down the shift key when you hit enter, you should be able to single-space.

That used to work for me, but doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

I'm taking a poetry workshop/class/thingy (as you can see, word-choice is my forte!) and we have to recite a few lines of a poem every class and I keep finding new, interesting ones on your blog. You make a difference. :)

Heh. Glad I can help with your homework...

Manually take out one of the < p >s. Or is it one of the < /p >? Anyway, try taking out one of them and see if it helps. I've had the same problem.

That's what I was thinking, but they weren't showing up as paragraph html tags when I switched over to view the source. It was something else and removing it just removed the line break.

Great poem. I love the last line. Perfect.

I also loved seeing the Tigers win in such dramatic fashion.

Yeah, two good endings there, the poem and the game--I figured you would appreciate both.

Liked the poem, Don't like the Tiger's. They knocked out my Twins that worked so hard to get to the playoffs!

Well, I was a *little* unhappy about the lack of balance between the Tigers, who will be either stale or rested, finishing so early, and the winner of the NLCS who will be either worn or filled with the big MO'. There is no doubt that rested pitching arms is an advantage, so I have to give the Tigers the edge going into the series, regardless of who they play. It must seem like an eternity of waiting to them though.
