Eight o'clock was just marked by the tolling of the bells. Even knowing that they're actually a midi file played through speakers mounted on the side of the fine arts building, I still appreciate the sonorous tones sounding out the hours, and when the bells called my attention to the world of sounds, I suddenly noticed the other sounds drifting into the window next to me: birdsong from probably a dozen species. The birds remind me of the young rabbit that came up almost to the sliding glass door yesterday as it cautiously crept around the yard, as well as the fawn that's wandering around here. Yesterday, Bambi and his 8-inch prongs came wandering into our backyard, and this morning Beaker finally saw him groping around campus for the best foliage to feast on. She let him know that a boarding school campus is no place for a deer, and dearly wanted to give chase when he ambled off in the awkward stride of the young--and I can think of few creatures that, when young, look more awkward when moving "quickly" than this young guy did. I didn't let her though--she probably could have caught the young buck, and what would she have done with him then?
One week from today, I'll be on another campus and hear other bells tolling the hours--then, it will be real bells from a real tower. No doubt I will hear some of the same birdsong. It will be a very different day than the one that unfolds today, because one week from today is our wedding. Instead of doing some work around the house, Lauren and I will be rushing around in the final hours before we get married.
We've almost got everything figured out for our wedding--perhaps we'll work on that today too, but it's all been coming together over the past year or so, with efforts intensifying more recently. We may be busy between now and then, but it will all get done, and then we can start the happily ever after. Or whatever it is that follows--I'm sure we'll make it good, and many mornings will start with birdsong and many mornings will be marked with bells tolling the hours of our lives together.
