I already knew that my local Shop und Save isn't the best grocery store in the world. Their selection is mediocre, the vegetables tend to have that not-so-fresh feeling, and they don't sell beer or wine (but that's the state of Pennsylvania's fault). In case I needed this confirmed, I glanced through this week's ad where I saw a couple things that caught my eye. The first was an ad for grape jelly, 2 for $3. The accompanying picture, however, was of three jars of jellly. With that visual companion, I don't think it takes a dyslexic to read this as 3 for $2.
Likewise, they offered Campbell's soup at 4 for $5 while showing 3 cans of soup. Maybe they didn't want the picture to be too cluttered?
Or maybe competence is just too expensive for our little grocer. In a culture as visual as ours, you have to know that an image really is worth about a thousand words and get the picture right. But if they really wanted to do that, they'd have to photograph nasty veggies as well, which wouldn't be that smart.
