Thursday Think 'n' Share XCI

posted Thursday, 26 April 2007

It's a relatively random T 'n' S today. At this point, I just feel lucky to have gotten something, anything out. I look forward to reading your thoughts, presuming you see fit to share them.

Where do you find new things that you expect you'll like?

When it comes to music, I usually find things either through recommendations from friends who have similar tastes. Also, going to live shows, I've found a few bands I liked in the opening acts (Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, for instance). Also, though I haven't listened as much lately, I discovered at least one band throug Pandora internet radion. With books, there's the same friend-recommendation scheme. Orson Scott Card's columns "Uncle Orson Reviews Everything" often has fantasy (also mystery, but I don't read mystery) novels reviewed, and I've found that he cares about enough of the same things in fiction that I can trust his reviews pretty well. I find some things just by browsing in the bookstore, which I think is how I found R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series. Through a fan forum for Bakker's books, I discovered my newest obsession, Steven Erikson.

Name one change you've made in your life recently.

That would be reorganizing my classroom, I guess, about which I've already blogged.

What do you find weighing on your mind most at the moment?

For me--and it's why I didn't blog yesterday and took so long today--it's school work. I had a big stack of research paper rough drafts that I needed to get back to students and then I have more piles of things that are less crucial to get back, but I still would hate to hold onto them too long, so I need to get them graded soon. Add to this the pressures of my choir's up-coming concert (2 hours and 15 minutes of rehearsal on Tuesday and Wednesday, plus a 40-minute round trip on one of those nights and 60 on the other) and it's been a stressful week.
