Thursday Think 'n' Share LXXXVII

In honor of March Madness, it's a sports-themed T T'n'S. Pull out your cleats, inflate those balls, and hit the court and/or field with me.

What is (or previously was) your favorite sport to play?

The only sport I played competitively in high school was tennis, and I do still love that game. I wish I found opportunities to play more than I do, but I certainly enjoy coaching it too. Both singles and doubles competition have their appeal--the purity of the competition in singles, the additional strategy and sociability of doubles. Another great thing about tennis is that it really is one of the life-long sports (and I'm terrible at golf).

I also enjoy pick-up games of football in the backyard or basketball... or ultimate frisbee or volleyball.

What is (or previously was) your favorite sport to watch?

Football, hands down. The sport offers such an interesting combination of strategy and phyical skill, of very different skills from different positions, and overall excitement. I enjoy watching high school sports of any kind, especially when I know the kids competing. I can usually get into a basketball game if it's on TV, though I won't necessarily seek those games out, except maybe over the holidays when I'm visiting my mother--we enjoy watching basketball together. I like baseball, but I like the live games much more than watching on TV. I'm one of the strange Americans who enjoys watching soccer--coaching it for 4 years really honed my appreciation for the sport. I like watching tennis well enough, but I wish they'd show more doubles.

Recount your favorite sporting experience, either as a player or a spectator.

That's probably on a personal level for me a tennis match I played my senior year of high school. I made managed to get myself out of 2nd doubles and into 3rd singles, and our team was playing the powerhouse of the league. The rest of my team lost in short order, but I managed to take my opponent to three sets. I'm pretty sure I ultimately lost, though I don't remember the score. What I remember was going toe-to-toe with a player who, by all rights should have been better than me, and giving him a much tougher match than he could have expected.
